House of Serenity, area’s only homeless shelter, celebrates 17 years

Seventeen  years ago on January 18, Frances Seymore opened the doors to House Serenity to provide temporary shelter for homeless citizens in Tangipahoa. Friends, family and other supporters joined current and past residents in celebrating the shelter’s anniversary.

“I do not have the space to meet the need of all the homeless,” said Seymore. “Our phone is constantly ringing with people seeking space for the homeless. The shelter is full most of the time.”

House of Serenity is the only homeless shelter outside of New Orleans, Baton Rouge, and west Mississippi. Seymore said, “I thank all my supporters. But, when all the funds are gone, I must use my personal funds to keep the doors open.”

Located at 247 North 12th St. in Ponchatoula, the shelter needs monetary donations as well as material goods. The phone number is 985-351-1879.
